Walking with the Word – More than We Imagine

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” (Ephesians 3:19-20)

From the well, Joseph had no idea what God had planned for Him as He was sold to an Egyptian by his brothers. He had been his father’s favorite son from His favorite wife. He had often told of the actions of his brothers, and they had begun to hate him. His father had given him a special coat of many colors, which made Joseph arrogant, then the dreams. “He said to them, ‘Listen to this dream I had: We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.” (Genesis 37:6-7) It was followed by another dream. “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.” (Genesis 37:9) Now from the well, he had no idea of what God had planned for Him.

Joseph would be used by God to save Egypt from drought and famine. He would rise to second in authority to the Pharaoh. He would even be able to help his family through these difficult days and would be restored to them as they came to Egypt. He was now humbled to be restored to his father, brothers and all their families. Joseph from the pit had no idea of what God was going to do with Him. God was going to do more than Joseph ever dreamed with his life as he was faithful to God through it all. Throughout the story of Joseph, the writer continued to say, the Lord was with him. (Genesis 39:2,3,5,20,23; 41:39,52, 45:5,8,9)

When God is with us, we cannot imagine what God is doing and will do with our lives. Paul writes, “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” (Ephesians 3:19-20) Two sets of brothers were called by Jesus while they were working with their fathers as fishermen. He said, “’Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will send you out to fish for people.’ At once they left their nets and followed him.” (Matthew 4:19-30) From that moment, they had no idea of what was ahead. They would follow Jesus and would be amazed at what God was about through Him. They would see lives changed as Jesus preached the Good New and verified that He was the Messiah, healing the lame, the blind, the deaf and raising the dead. They saw Him change water to wine, and feed the multitudes. Then they saw the greatest act of love when Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead. They went from those in fear of the authorities to those who boldly proclaimed that He is alive.

God desires to change our lives. As He does, He can do things in our lives that we never thought possible or even dreamed of. Thus, Paul writes, “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” (Ephesians 3:19-20) The God at work in our lives is the same God of Joseph and the disciples. His desire is that we will walk in obedience to Him. When we do, we have no idea of what He will do with us. We only know that when we follow and obey it will bring glory to God.
