Walking with the Word – Creator

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)

The Scripture has but one subject. That subject is God. When everything started, God was there before and started it all. Jesus Christ in His prayer for us before the crucifixion let us know that God and His glory was here before creation as they are one. As he finished his work He prayed. “I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.” (John 17:4-5)

Isaiah acknowledged God as Creator when he spoke of God’s control of creation. “’To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?’ says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.” (Isaiah 40: 25-26) He also speaks of God’s understanding of creation. “Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance?” (Isaiah 40:12) God has all knowledge, for who is there to teach Him? “Whom did the LORD consult to enlighten him, and who taught him the right way? Who was it that taught him knowledge, or showed him the path of understanding? Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales; he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust.” (Isaiah 40:14-15)

The heart of God’s love is found in the creation of man. He spent time with man as He walked with Him. When man had sinned, God was walking in the garden as it appears was the habit to spend time with Him. Therefore, He called out, “Where are you?” (Genesis 3:9) For man, everything changed as the result of sin. However, the Creator had a plan. The beginning of the plan was introduced in the curse of the serpent. “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” (Genesis 3:15) The serpent would ultimately be defeated with the crushing of his head, but he would strike a fatal blow as he strikes the heel. This offspring would not only be the son of man, but also the Son of God and would defeat sin and death. That Son is Jesus Christ.

The first words of Scripture are “In the beginning.” (Gensis 1:1a) If there is a beginning there must also be an ending. Thus, we find in the book of Revelation, “Then I saw ‘a new heaven and a new earth,’ for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.” (Revelation 21:1) This heaven and earth will pass away, but God’s new creation will last for eternity. And according to Jesus, He has gone to prepare this new place for us, who have come to Him by faith. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” (John 14:1-3)

Since the Scripture’s subject is God, His love for us directs His actions to us. Jesus has come to provide us the gift of salvation. This provision has established a relationship with Him that will never end. “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” (1 John 3:1a) Today, let us walk with Him.

In the Love of Jesus,
