“Our Lord is great, vast in power; His understanding is infinite.” (Psalm 147:5 CSV)
“To infinity and beyond,” announced Buzz Lightyear in the movie Toy Story. While a cartoon movie character may have a rememberable catch phrase, how do we view infinity? How do we as believers view infinity? And better yet, how does Scripture view infinity? We who are finite still try to wrap our minds around the concept of infinity and that which is infinite.
I looked in a dictionary for the definition of infinite, when used as a noun here is the definition, “something that is infinite.” So, then I looked up infinity and it said, “the quality of being infinite.” Now to be fair, there were other definitions. Yet, for both the first definition of infinite and infinity was the statement that it is infinite. How do you define a word with itself? However here are other definitions: immeasurably or inconceivably great or extensive, inexhaustible, subject to no limitation or external determination, extending beyond, lying beyond, or being greater than any preassigned finite value, however large.
Here is my thought, how do you describe the infinite nature about God, when the understanding of infinite is God? It is like looking at the vastness of space on a clear night, then realizing yourself on this blue dot in the universe, knowing your limitations and yet dreaming of what can be. Welcome to the challenge of infinite! So, hear the revelation of God’s infinite attributes expressed in Scripture. Then spend time today reflecting and meditating on the infinite nature of our LORD God.
“Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!” (Romans 11:33) “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1) “Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.” (Psalm 147:5) “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight.” (Hebrews 4:13) “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.” (Psalm 139:7-8) “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” (Revelation 1:8) “Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.” (Isaiah 40:28) “Who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them?” declares the LORD. “Do not I fill heaven and earth?” declares the LORD.” (Jeremiah 23:24) “Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom.” (Psalm 145:3) “’What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived’ — the things God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9) “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:9) “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:7) “God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.” (1 Timothy 6:15-16)
