Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. Colossians 2:6-7 (ESV)
Welcome to Walking with the Word. The foundation of Christianity is a personal relationship with God through the risen Son of God, Jesus Christ. Jesus described why He came when He said, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10b ESV) The reason the Son of God came to earth was that we could come into a relationship with God.
Mankind’s relationship with God was broken because we have all sinned against God. In Paul’s letter to the Romans, he would simply tell us about our problem when He said, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23 NIV) We were separated from God, all of us, because all of us, have sinned against God. That is why Jesus came, to bring us into a relationship with God.
The cost for God to bring us back into a relationship with Him was for Him to take our judgment, so that He could reach out to each of us. The judgment was death, “the wages of sin is death.” (Romans 6:23a NIV) Not just physical death now, but death for all eternity, which is to be eternally separated from God.
This is the reason Jesus came, that He would take our judgment for us. Jesus said, “the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45 NIV) God came as a man to bridge the gap caused by our sin and bring us into a relationship with Him.
When we come into a relationship with God, it is by faith in what God has done for us through Jesus Christ. Paul would write to The Galatian Churches, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20 NIV)
Our lives now are to be lived in a relationship with God which comes to us when we place our faith in God and what He has done for us in Jesus Christ. Once we have placed our faith in what God has done, we begin a relationship with God that will never end. It is also a life where God begins to make us anew as Christ now lives, not just with us, but in us.
In the opening of John’s Gospel, John calls Jesus the Word. He is the Living Word of God. As we now are believers and followers of Jesus, we walk through this life with Him. We learn to follow and live for Him, representing Him to everyone around us. Walking with the Word is a description of how we are to live each and every day, so those around us may see Jesus’ love in us. Let us Walk with the Word.
In the Love of Jesus,
Michael Block
